Afghanistan like many other countries faces grave challenges as a result of the Covid19 pandemic. The virus has overwhelmed the health care system, adversely affected the ongoing peace process, and slashed economic growth, hampering economic and social progress.

Most of the CSOs I have met have also been negatively affected by Covid-19; in carrying out their operations, implementing their projects and in their funding raising efforts. In the face of this reality, whilst many CSOs have adapted and have improvised their modus operandi (i.e. working remotely and utilizing Information Communication Technologies), yet many activities and projects, particularly those implemented in the communities, have been kept on hold because of restrictions on gathering and assemblies. In terms of operations and project delivery, keeping the team motivated and ensuring project deadline and timelines were met, were and remains the key challenges as a result of Covid19. Most CSOs have focused on table-top activities such as policy reviews, developing plans, reviewing management system etc. However, the needs and priorities of the citizens and communities largely remains unmet.

We at AICS believe in using technology in development and promoting electronic learning. The impact and advantages of technology on productivity and efficiency is exponential; as it enables smooth sharing, mobility, and remote connectivity. Covid19 strongly highlighted the need for smart utilization of technology in workspace; in managing projects and operation, monitoring and evaluation, as well as capacity building.

In an effort to promote eLearning among civil society organizations, AICS with financial support from GIZ have began implementing a project titled “Civil Society Digital Community of Practices”. The one-year project aims to develop an eLearning platform, create a central depository, and develop a discussion forum for civil society organizations in Afghanistan.  The initiative will enhance exchange of knowledge and learning, increase awareness of learning events, and contributes toward development of smarter tools and methodologies for civil society capacity development.
